There is truly a massive library of music inspired by the state of Georgia, perhaps as much (or more) than juggernauts New York, California, and Texas. Maybe it’s the distinct four seasons of weather that keeps the landscape ever-changing, or the versatility of scenery from the foothills of the Appalachian to the city streets of Atlanta and down to the backwoods of the South. Perhaps it’s the history and mystique, both welcoming and hopeful… and equally dark and tragic. The music of our state is a reflection of everything we are and have been.
As a DJ and entertainment company spanning three decades of events in Georgia, SE Events has drawn upon many of these anthems over the years. And while no list is perfect, we’d like to share our “unofficial” top 10 songs…
#10. “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” – Otis Redding
This gem from one of soul’s most iconic voices really should be in the Top 3 of ANY list… but it’s more about the troubles we carry than about Georgia specifically.
#9. “Ramblin’ Man” – Allman Brothers
“My father was a gambler down in Georgia, He wound up on the wrong end of a gun.” Gambling and guns… so Georgia!
#8. “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” – Reba McEntire
This murder ballad was covered by Vicki Lawrence during her Carl Burnett Show run, but Reba helped make it memorable with her 1991 rendition and music video.
#7. “ATLiens” – Outkast
So where do you even start with Atlanta’s legendary hip-hop duo? I’m partial to the title track of my favorite album (fish and grits anyone?).
#6. “Chattahoochee” – Alan Jackson
Does it really get hotter than a hoochie coochie? Yes… yes it does. I blame the humidity.
#5. “Love Shack” – The B-52’s
Athens, GA darlings The B-52’s have given Georgia a lot of be proud of, but this party-starter is a DJ’s dream!
#4. “Midnight Train to Georgia” – Gladys Knight and the Pips
Sometimes a Cali to Georgia trip is better for the soul than Georgia to Cali.
#3. “Welcome to Atlanta” – Jermaine Dupri f Ludacris
No Dirty South song more perfectly paints the picture of the A-T-L than this classic anthem!
#2. “Devil Went Down to Georgia” – Charlie Daniels Band
Epic… Southern storytelling and musicianship at it’s finest! But doesn’t having a band join in during a fiddle contest disqualify you?
#1. “Georgia On My Mind” – Ray Charles
This is the state song every other state wishes they had. Just beautiful.
