It’s getting cold and you see it on your calendar. Yes, Christmas is almost here! And those great Christmas songs! You see them on the TV, hear them on the Radio… and what store is not already playing them? Many people hate to hear these songs before Thanksgiving, while others count down the days until they can start playing those festive jams. This post has nothing to do with that. But it does have to do with the songs that are “Non-Christmas” holiday songs; ones you might hear at an SE Events party coming up!

So let’s get the Holly and Jolly ready, because this Top 10 List you may enjoy or hate me for! And I just might make you look at a song that you never knew could be a Christmas song.

#10. Lady in Red – Chris DeBurgh

Wait, what? How does this love song from the 80’s have to do with Christmas? Well, think about it! What is the big color for a woman’s dress at almost every Christmas party next to black? RED!

Yes, even the first two lines of the song can be “Christmas-y”…

“I’ve never seen you looking so lovely as you did tonight
I’ve never seen you shine so bright”

Is it a reach. Let’s move to the next song!

#9 Wonderful Tonight – Eric Clapton

Come one Lou? Another love song from the 80’s! Well, yeah!

She asks him how she looks because they are going to a party.

Then in the middle, he sings… We go to the party. Everyone is looking at the woman walking around with me!

Then at the end, he has drank to much and she has to put him to bed.

What man hasn’t lived these three parts of the song at the company Christmas party?

I hope I didn’t ruin this song for you!

#8 Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow.

I get it. Snow=Christmas. I am from NY. And we always wished for a White Christmas. But on many a year, we never got it. And here in Atlanta, we almost never get snow!

It’s like that Santa Clause kids movie from the 60’s. You know Santa Clause is coming to town! Southtown never gets snow on Christmas!

So how is this a Christmas song? I think it is because it brings wonderful memories, or simply hope of that feeling. Nothing looks better than your house looking like a Rockwell Picture.

Who doesn’t love looking at homes all decked out with Christmas decor? The Snow is the perfect topping!

#7 Skating – Vince Guaraldi

I love this song! I get the picture of Snoopy Ice Skating in my head. My wife and I love feeling like a kid watching a Charlie Brown Christmas every single year. But is this song just one of many Amazing Jazz performances that we now tag with the label “Christmas”? Am I allowed to enjoy this song in August, with a drink in my hand on a beach? Nope. This song is now in our minds as Christmas!

#6 Ave Maria – Schubert

Here is another one that you might be scratching your head about! But this song and musical piece was written for Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Isn’t he the reason for the season? “Ave Maria” is one of the best known and beloved pieces of Christian religious music. The version written by Franz Schubert is widely sung at Catholic masses and other Christian religious ceremonies: and its text is a literal translation into Latin of the famous “Hail Mary” prayer.

Give it up for the Mom’s who make Christmas.

#5 Baby, It’s Cold Outside – Dean Martin

How the heck is this a Christmas song? It’s a song about a guy hoping to keep a date going on a cold winter night!

We all sing this song that would be better played in the dead of winter in January or February.

Baby, you’ll freeze out there!

#4 Winter Wonderland – Johnny Mathis

Sleigh Bells ring, are you listening?

That’s it! The only part of the song that could link this song with Christmas!

Ohhh… but the feeling you get when this song is on the radio, and your tree is all bright and glowing with the living room lights off?!

Just magic!

#3 Frosty the Snowman – The Ronettes

Lou! Frosty had Santa in the cartoon! I remember that! It’s a Christmas song.

Oh yeah, I have been playing this song for close to 30 years. I love it! But not one word about Christmas.

I know, I am a scrooge!

#2  You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch – Thurl Ravenscroft

Ha ha! He stole Christmas!

You’re a monster Mr. Grinch!

Your Hearts an empty hole!

Your brain is full of spiders!

You’ve got garlic in your soul!

Mr. Grinch!

I wouldn’t touch you with a 39-and-a-half Foot pole!

HOW IS THAT CHRISTMAS?! OK, the movie is amazing. I love both the original Cartoon and the Jim Carrey remake. I feel all happy and warm inside when this movie comes on.

But this song is now is a Christmas must! Oh, heck, I was singing it right now! I bet you were also!

#1 Hanukkah Song – Adam Sandler

Yes, this song has nothing to do with Christmas. And every radio station will have this song in its rotation in the month of December!

The song was written as a joke for Saturday Night Live. Remember, when that show was funny?! We all sing it, even if there are many years Christmas and Hanukkah are weeks apart!

Honorable mention!

My Favorite Things – The Sound of Music!

Oh, this song is just eking Christmas! Isn’t it? Nope. Nothing about Christmas, but they do sing about snow that melts in the spring.

I dare you not to sing this song… and then NOT think of December and the holiday season!

Home for the Holidays- Kenny Loggins

Here is another song that can be played anytime during the year? Don’t we celebrate during Fourth of July?

(There is no place like) Home for the Holidays – Perry Como

One classic song that is just like the one above. Never said Christmas, but it is a Christmas song!

I hope you enjoy this wonderful season of happiness, family, joy, and good tidings with the ones you hold dear. And I hope you hear these wonderful songs and think about how amazing they make you feel. Isn’t that the most important thing during the holiday season?

See you on the dance floor!
