I’ve been lucky to have worked with so many different types of couples up and down the Eastern Seaboard of America!  From full-blown Indian weddings (where I have zero clue what the singers are saying, but the crowd is going nuts!), all the way to couples who only want background music for a Sunday brunch.

I have heard it all!

From “Achy Breaky Heart” redone by Mexican singers (video below)

To remixed versions of “The Greatest Show” for a couple’s first dance (video below)

Yes, we as DJ’s can play anything, any version, any style, at any time!  We can edit not-so-clean songs to make them clean, and even make custom mash-ups of tracks you love.  But when couple asks me what they should pick for music, I give them one guide.

First I ask them the style of music they enjoy. Then I ask them to look at who they are asking to come to the wedding. Will they enjoy that music?

One couple I worked with is a perfect example of this. The both LOVED (see how I put that in caps) Metallica. Has to be played at the wedding. This was when Metallica was hard and not as mainstream as it is now! I suggested a few ways to make this happen. Use “Enter Sandman” for grand entrance. “Nothing Else Matters” for 1st dance. We keep that going for parent dances, cake and even last dance.

Then for the wedding, we played music the family could enjoy and dance to. The couple was very happy. The father of the groom even told us how it was great the way we worked the couples love of a band into the important parts of the wedding.

So where am I going with this?

When you are making a list for us DJ’s to play, think to yourself “What music will help my crowd enjoy my wedding more?”. Yes, please pick music you love, but look out for those out-there songs that might make your family look at each other weirdly.

Like this request from a bride…

Yes, I had a couple request this version of this song!  Sometimes the original version of a song works better.

I would love to hear the music you want at your wedding! Let’s work together to make an epic playlist your family and friends will remember… and hold other weddings to!

See you on the dance floor!
