As a baby from the 80’s, the movie soundtrack was a great way for someone to get a ton of music from different artists on one album or CD!
This was also a great way for DJ’s to keep older music alive! Here is a great example. “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers off the Ghost soundtrack!
While the rest of the album didn’t have one single hit on it, the Ghost soundtrack was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score.
I want to talk about some great albums that, over my 30 years of DJ’ing, I would have in my record case, CD album, or even in my digital library.
You should pick up any of these albums to add to your digital collection!
GREASE
This album from the movie Grease was a staple for any DJ in the 90’s to have. You can still play songs from this album at parties today!
The Big Chill
High school friends come together at a funeral of an old friend in this movie. The music from their high school years are highlighted in this amazing album!
This soundtrack helped DJ put that 60’s Motown and Party sound together in one place.
A must-listen-to for anyone who loves this style!
You get Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, The Young Radicals, Procol Harum and much more!!
When Harry Met Sally
There are few soundtracks that help America remember a forgotten style of music.
In this case, I give you When Harry Met Sally!
DJ’s all over the US loved when this album dropped. You had a new dinner collection you could play great music from… and Harry Connick Jr.
If you enjoy that Sinatra sound, this is a must for you to have!
The Blues Brothers
There was a time when the Blues Brothers could be played at any party I DJ’ed at!
This fun, exciting album will get you feeling good with that Blues and Rock-n-Roll vibe. And they brought back the amazing song “Soul Man”. Talk about party sound!!
Saturday Night Fever
Well, yeah. How can you not dance to one or more songs on this soundtrack!
Not only do you have your Disco standards from the Bee Gees, The Tramps, Tavares, and Kool & the Gang, but you get the deep Disco sound from MFSB, Shire , and KC & The Sunshine Band.
Did you know they even have two groups singing the same song on this album! “More than a Woman” is performed by Tavares and the Bee Gees!
The original album had two records in it. It also sold over 45 million copies worldwide. Stayed atop the album charts for 24 straight weeks from January to July 1978 and stayed on Billboard‘s album charts for 120 weeks until March 1980. AND was added to the National Recording Registry in the Library of Congress on March 21, 2013 for long-term preservation.
This is a must-own for any music lover!
GoodFellas
You better get this next soundtrack or I’ll give you half a slap! The gangster movie of Gangster movies has a soundtrack that will make any person feel like they are in the Mob.
Yes, you get American standards from Tony Bennett and Bobby Darin, but you also have that iconic Layla (piano exit) cut from Derek and the Dominos. If you don’t know who they are, that was Eric Clapton’s band.
So get you best suit on and feel Italian for a short time!
American Graffiti
Before cruising through the vastness of space, George Lucas put audiences in the driver’s seat of classic cars for this odyssey through the teen culture of the birth of rock n’ roll.
These oldies jams will bring you back to the Hop and Drive-In
Another two-record soundtrack that can help any music lover collect all, in one spot, the must-have 50’s and early 60’s songs!
New Jack City
Let’s not forget about that New Jack sound of the early 90’s.
You can learn about this music by picking up one soundtrack…New Jack City. Color Me Badd, Guy, Johnny Gill and even 2 Live Crew have great songs you can enjoy. This album set the bar high for so many phenomenal hip-hop and R&B soundtracks that followed.
Last but not least… Dirty Dancing!
“It was a freight train,” music supervisor Michael Lloyd told Rolling Stone of the Dirty Dancing soundtrack’s, and film’s, unlikely success.
Did you know that when they started filming, they didn’t even have any music cleared to be on the SOUNDTRACK? Imagine that… and here we have a record that sold 32 million copies and is one of the best selling albums of all time.
The music was so wanted from this movie that had to release a second album to cover it all!
Head to Amazon right now and pick them both up.
I could go on and on!
