How we love to see the dress. It’s an amazing symbol of love, hope, happiness, and the start of something forever. As someone in the industry, I have seen thousand of gowns. Some small, some large… and some that even made the bride’s day very unpleasant.
Wait Lou, this is supposed to be that bride’s perfect day! How can a dress make a day unpleasant for a bride? I will give you a few ways they have, along with a few ideas of things I have seen to fix this.
Before we start, here is a quick video of 100 years of the wedding dress. You might enjoy this if you are shopping for one right now.
*** Oh, I want to put a disclaimer right here. I am not going to bash any idea of a wedding dress! I am just using what brides have told me about what they wish could have been changed about their personal dress.
Let’s give you an outsider’s view and (I hope) ideas!
#1 – Bustle the Dress
I watched a few gowns bustled in my time as a wedding DJ. I have even helped, and seen the frustration in this part of the gown!
Why do they have to be so crazy? Have you practiced with who is going to do this? How come no one has ever used Velcro or a tear away dress idea? Watch this video below to learn more about bustling a dress.
I have seen bustles break and make the day go bad for the bride. Here is a great idea. Make sure you get a bustle that is easy to do. Make sure it is strong enough to last the full event!
#2 – Change to a Party Dress
Yes! I love this! Get a fun, easy-to-wear party dress. This is done in many cultures.
Point fact that in Chinese weddings, we can not start the party until the bride changes from the White Gown to her Red Dress! This give a sense of anticipation in the crowd about the party. I have even seen the bride use black gowns for the ceremony and a white party dress for dancing! Below is an example. Same bride. Two different dresses! The crowd loves this idea!
#3 – Last thing… the Weight of the Dress
Yes! This is overly important! I have literally seen brides pass out because of this. I will give you an example.
Wedding days is here. It was February… yep the 2nd month of the year. It is cold in 90% of the country. You might want a heavier, warmer dress, right? Bride puts on the gown at 11AM for pre-ceremony photos. Last dance is at midnight. That is 11 hours of having this dress on.
She takes pre-ceremony photos outside in the cold, and she it total happy about the dress and it’s warmth! But wait, she is inside the rest of the day. Every room she is in is warm! The bride is fine for the ceremony and first dance, but begins to feel it during the cake cutting. She is showing signs of physical exhaustion during that first dance party set. Shortly after, we have to end the party one hour before planned because this poor bride can not even stand due to the weight of the dress.
I hope these quick tips have helped. Enjoy the whole experience of dress shopping, but take your time and find the right dress for you!
That way, I can help you dance all night long at your wedding.
See you on the dance floor!
